The Boulder High Panthers wrapped up a memorable spring break trip to Arizona with a dramatic finish Saturday morning, falling 7-6 to the Skyridge Falcons on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was a tough ending for a team that had been playing outstanding baseball, but the overall story of the week was clear.
The Panthers battled through four competitive games in the Arizona heat, won three games in two days, and returned home with a strong 3-1 record, confidence growing, and contributions coming from throughout the roster.
A Productive Week in the Desert
Boulder's offense was a steady force all week, consistently putting runners on base and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. The Panthers showed patience at the plate, aggressive base running, and timely hitting, highlighted by a dominant 13-3 victory over Mountain Pointe and a series of strong performances earlier in the trip.
Across the four games, the Panthers combined for big innings, strong pitching, and dependable defense. The lineup proved deep, with production coming from veterans and underclassmen alike, a key sign of a team continuing to find its rhythm early in the season.
The Finale: A Battle to the Last Pitch
Saturday's matchup against Skyridge was tightly contested from the first inning to the last. Boulder scored in four different innings and carried a 6–5 lead into the late stages before the Falcons rallied in the final frame.
Sophomore Nick Dubofsky delivered one of the strongest pitching performances of the trip, working five innings and striking out eight batters, keeping the Panthers in position to win. Junior Finn Torvik and senior Toby Schoenfeld provided relief innings as Boulder fought to close out the game.
Offensively, the Panthers continued to battle. Junior Connor Bagnall delivered a key RBI hit, while senior Chance Gauss, junior Sam Skubic, and junior Finn Torvik each recorded hits that kept pressure on the Skyridge defense. Sophomore Max Daily came through with a clutch extra-base hit and RBI, and senior Maks Matheson sparked momentum with aggressive base running, including a stolen base that helped create scoring opportunities.
Despite the loss, the Panthers showed resilience and competitiveness throughout the game, a reflection of the strong week they put together in Arizona.
Contributions Across the Roster
One of the biggest takeaways from the trip was how many players stepped up in meaningful ways.
At the top of the lineup, senior Rowan Westfall set the tone by consistently getting on base, drawing walks, and scoring runs that helped fuel rallies. Senior Miles Love provided speed and energy on the bases, collecting hits, swiping multiple bases, and creating pressure on opposing pitchers throughout the tournament.
Junior Sam Skubic delivered several big moments at the plate, including a home run during the Panthers' win over Mountain Pointe, while also playing clean defense in the field. Senior Toby Schoenfeld contributed both offensively and on the mound, adding key RBIs and late-game relief innings.
Junior Connor Bagnall and junior Finn Torvik provided timely hitting throughout the trip, including extra-base hits that helped Boulder build momentum in several games. Senior Chance Gauss delivered steady defense and key hits in important situations, while junior Bennett Levinson earned a win on the mound and delivered valuable innings during the Panthers' strong stretch of play.
Senior Maks Matheson contributed important runs and aggressive base running, and sophomore Max Daily provided a spark with a clutch double in the tournament finale. Junior Teague Bagnall added speed and energy on the bases, scoring runs and creating pressure, while junior Cole Vangelis anchored the defense with reliable play in the field.
Together, the group demonstrated the depth and balance that defined the Panthers' successful week in Arizona.
A Strong Foundation Moving Forward
Finishing 3-1 during spring break against quality competition is a strong early-season statement. The Panthers showed they can score runs in bunches, rely on multiple pitchers, and compete in tight games. Just as important, they proved that contributions can come from anywhere in the lineup.
The final result may have been a walk-off loss, but the trip provided valuable experience, built confidence, and showcased the team's potential as the season continues.
Next up, the Panthers will take on Monarch on March 28th at 11:00 AM at Scott Carpenter Park in Boulder.
