Panthers Roar in Fairview Tournament, Top Evergreen and Fairview to Go 2-1

The Boulder High Panthers girls' basketball team opened their 2024-25 season with grit, bouncing back from an early loss to notch two impressive wins in the Fairview Tournament. Despite falling to a tough and quick Mountain Vista squad in the opener on Dec. 10, Boulder showcased their resilience by defeating Evergreen 38-27 on Dec. 12 and taking down their crosstown rival Fairview 41-27 on Dec. 14.

Fast Start Meets a Tough Challenge

The season tipped off against Mountain Vista, a team known for their high-speed offense and sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Although final stats weren't available for that contest, the scoreline—70-43 in favor of Mountain Vista—reflected the challenge the Panthers faced against a well-oiled opponent. Historically, Boulder has yet to solve the Mountain Vista puzzle, but the experience may serve as a valuable learning opportunity for the squad.

Shutting Down Evergreen

On Dec. 12, Boulder regrouped for a clash with Evergreen. A dominant defensive effort, highlighted by 12 steals, proved the difference-maker as the Panthers held Evergreen to just 27 points. Guard play was pivotal, fueling a gritty defensive showing that also saw Boulder control the boards with 29 rebounds and the Panthers found a way to grind out the victory. Their 67% free throw shooting gave the Panthers just enough offensive punch to secure their first win of the season.

This game also marked Boulder's third consecutive win over Evergreen, dating back to their last meeting in 2009. With a now 3-2 all-time record against the Cougars, the Panthers continue to edge this out-of-conference rivalry in their favor.

Rivalry Victory

Momentum carried into the Panthers' highly anticipated showdown with Fairview on Dec. 14. Boulder's balanced attack and defensive intensity carried the day. The Panthers posted 41 points while hauling in 33 rebounds, dishing out 8 assists, and swiping 8 steals. The 33% success rate from beyond the arc kept Fairview on their heels throughout the game.

This win marked Boulder's second straight victory over their rivals, extending a streak that began with their Jan. 30 triumph last season. Historically, Fairview has had the upper hand in this rivalry, holding a 7-18 record against Boulder since 2007. However, the tide may be turning, with the Panthers beginning to assert their dominance.

Strong Foundation for the Future

With a roster featuring six seniors, two juniors, and five sophomores, Boulder has a mix of experience and youthful talent to carry them through this season and beyond. The team's defensive energy, led by their active hands and rebounding, has already proven key to their success.

As they look ahead, the Panthers will aim to build on their momentum when they return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17, hosting an early-season home game at Boulder High School against Monarch. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and the Panthers will look to keep improving as they set their sights on a successful season.
