There was a sense of anticipation in the air Tuesday afternoon at Recht Field as the Boulder High School girls soccer team finally opened its home season. After weather cancellations pushed back their start, the Panthers were eager to get on the field in front of their home crowd.
And after an early setback, they delivered a strong response, rallying for a 3-1 victory over the Monarch Coyotes to even their record at 1-1 on the season.
Early Challenge, Strong Response
Finley McCormack
The match got off to a rocky start for Boulder. Just five minutes in, Monarch broke through on a dangerous chance. Goalkeeper Finley McCormack made an impressive breakaway save to keep the Panthers in the game, but the rebound fell directly to Monarch's Hailey Paddock, who finished cleanly to give the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead.
Instead of letting the early goal shake their confidence, the Panthers settled in. Boulder began to find its rhythm, tightening its shape defensively and moving the ball more effectively through the midfield. As the half progressed, the Panthers grew more aggressive in the attacking third and began to apply steady pressure.
That pressure finally paid off late in the first half.
Zoe Silver
With 5:17 remaining, a rebound bounced into the path of senior Zoe Silver, who calmly slotted the ball past the Monarch keeper to tie the match 1-1. The equalizer energized the Panthers and shifted momentum firmly to the home side heading into halftime.
Second-Half Surge Seals the Win
The Panthers came out of the break with intensity and purpose, determined to capitalize on the momentum they had built. From the opening whistle of the second half, Boulder pressed high and forced Monarch into defensive mode.
PETE SHEINBAUM
Sophomore Kiri Fogarty-Sears provided the spark the Panthers needed. She found the net twice in the second half, delivering the go-ahead goal and later adding an insurance score to secure the 3-1 victory. Both goals marked season-first tallies for Fogarty-Sears, while Silver's equalizer was also her first of the year.
Boulder's attack was fueled by strong midfield play and unselfish ball movement. Sophomore Ane Mackey recorded two assists, helping set up key scoring opportunities, while junior Allison Arias Aguilar added another assist during the second-half push.
Defensive Effort Anchors the Victory
While the offense found its rhythm, the Panthers' defense and goalkeeping played a major role in the outcome. McCormack finished with seven saves, including several key stops that preserved the lead late in the match.
Elle Ceres
Defenders Elle Ceres, Kara Dougherty, and Lia Stoddard helped organize the back line, while midfielders Tula Gonzalez, Avery Justice, and Elsie Paine worked tirelessly to win possession and keep the pressure on Monarch.
Freshman contributions also stood out, with Avery Koger, Fiona Lausten, Evi James, and Riley Silver providing valuable minutes and energy throughout the match.
Building Momentum at Home
The victory continues a positive trend for Boulder in recent matchups with Monarch, as the Panthers have now won three consecutive meetings against the Coyotes. More importantly, it marked a confident response after an early-season road loss and showed the team's resilience and composure under pressure.
After waiting through weather delays to start their home schedule, the Panthers made the most of their opportunity in front of the Boulder crowd, delivering a determined performance from start to finish.
Next up, the Panthers will travel to face Fairview on March 27 at 6:30 PM.
