In a game that was anything but quiet, Boulder High's Varsity Softball team outslugged the Prairie View Thunderhawks in a 22-14 victory on Saturday at home. Both teams' offenses came alive, with Boulder racking up 22 hits and Prairie View managing 14 in the high-scoring showdown.
Sophie Jones had a day to remember, collecting three hits in five at-bats, including a solo shot to center in the fifth inning. Jones added singles in the third and fifth, capping off a stellar performance at the plate.
The Thunderhawks struck first, tagging up on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Ortiz to take an early lead. Boulder wasted no time responding, as Sophia Pereira crossed home after tagging up in the bottom of the first to level the score.
The game took a wild turn in the third inning when Boulder erupted for 12 runs on 12 hits. Pereira started the rally with a towering home run to center field. From there, the hits just kept coming. Annali Langenegger tripled, while Ria Ushakova and Channing Wheeler both doubled, pushing the Panthers into a commanding 14-5 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Boulder tacked on two more runs with another home run from Jones, and Ellie Jones scored after tagging up. The Panthers put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with a six-run explosion. Wheeler, Lillian Vaughn, and Kendal Evans all contributed RBI singles, while Langenegger and Madelyn Armstrong (Maddie) added runs with timely hits.
Pereira earned the win in relief, allowing eight hits and eight runs over five innings, with one strikeout and eight walks. Vaughn started in the circle, giving up three hits and four runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking three.
