Boulder High's girls cross country team put the rest of Colorado on notice Saturday, winning the Sweepstakes team title at the Liberty Bell Cross Country Invitational — the marquee race of one of the state's biggest and most competitive early-season meets — beating out 20 other teams, including plenty of familiar 5A and 4A powerhouses.
Girls Sweepstakes: A Statement Win
Junior
Calia Vaughn set the tone, finishing 8th overall in 17:28.58 against a field that included some of the fastest runners in the state. But this was a team win, not a one-woman show. Sophie Roza (21st, 18:08.32),
Emery Agnew (26th, 18:16.21), Kajsa Wik (37th, 18:37.97), and Berkeley Harrison (39th, 18:39.94) rounded out Boulder's scoring five, all finishing within 71 seconds of each other — the kind of tight, disciplined pack running that wins invitationals. The Panthers' 98 points were good enough for first place, ahead of host Heritage (123) and a stacked group of contenders that included cross-town rival Fairview, Cherry Creek, Arapahoe, and ThunderRidge.
Lucy Friend and
Sophia Africa rounded out the seven-runner squad as displacers.
Boys: Strong Showings on Two Fronts
The boys' effort was split across two levels of competition, and both had bright spots. Senior
Jack Rhodes tested himself in the same Sweepstakes race as the girls, against the state's deepest boys field, and more than held his own — 38th overall in 15:36.86, a time that would have placed him among the top finishers in almost any other race at the meet. Meanwhile, Boulder's Division 1 varsity squad, led by
Tyler Emdur's 4th-place finish in 16:06.34, placed 7th out of 22 teams — a strong result in a stacked division topped by Cherokee Trail and Doherty, who both finished with 72 points at the top of the standings.
Alexander Mahan, Jake Emdur,
Jeremy Wynett, and Tristan Wilberger rounded out Boulder's scoring five, with Tyler Owen and
Jacob Freels running as displacers.
Momentum Building
Two results, two signs that this program is exactly where it wants to be in early September. The Panthers have real depth on both sides, a proven star in Vaughn, and now a signature team win to build on heading into the heart of the schedule.
