Boulder High's football team opened the 2026 season the hard way Thursday night, building a two-touchdown cushion at Brighton and then having to grind out every last second of it, holding on for a 17-16 win that's a lot more comfortable in the record book than it felt in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers came out with a clear plan: establish it early and make Brighton play from behind. Senior quarterback Ethan Toth punched it in himself from 10 yards out to cap the opening drive, and Duke Tuitele followed a series later with an 11-yard scoring run of his own, staking Boulder to a 14-8 halftime lead. Tuitele was the workhorse the offense needed all night, grinding out 17 hard-earned carries for 39 yards, and Toth was money through the air when it mattered — 10 of 13 passing for 96 yards, with Jack Neslage doing the heavy lifting on the receiving end with four catches for 39 yards.

Drake Schall put an exclamation point on the third quarter, splitting the uprights from 30 yards to push the lead to nine. Schall might have been the most valuable Panther on the field who never touched the ball on offense — the field goal, both extra points, a pair of booming punts, four kickoffs. Special teams doesn't get enough credit, and Schall earned every bit of his five points.

Brighton wasn't done, though, and to their credit they made Boulder sweat for it. A fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion trimmed the margin to 17-16 and turned the closing minutes into the kind of white-knuckle finish that reminds everyone why high school football on a Thursday night still matters. But this is where Boulder's defense showed its teeth. Ben Warren led the way with 5.5 tackles, Neslage came up with five more to go with his big night catching passes and then delivered the biggest play of the game — an interception that took the air out of Brighton's comeback bid for good. Tuitele and Brandon Kohla kept the pressure on up front with 3.5 and 3 tackles, respectively.

It wasn't the cleanest opener — Boulder racked up 10 penalties of its own, seven of them on offense, the kind of first-game jitters every team is still shaking loose in week one. None of that mattered when the final whistle blew. The Panthers are 1-0, and however it looked at times, a win is a win on the road to open a season.
