Boulder Field Hockey Earns First-Ever State Playoff Win

Boulder's Game Winning Goal by Tenley Layne

The Boulder High field hockey team reached another milestone Tuesday night, earning its first state playoff victory in program history. The eighth-seeded Panthers defeated No. 9 Mountain Vista, 1-0, at Recht Field to advance to the state quarterfinals.

First Half

The match began with Boulder controlling possession and tempo early, keeping the ball in Mountain Vista's end for much of the first half. The Panthers created several scoring chances and earned multiple corners, but couldn't find the back of the net. Late in the half, Boulder broke through for a clear look on goal, only to be stopped by a sharp save from the Vista goalkeeper. The visitors, meanwhile, were unable to generate any real offense, finishing the half without a single shot or corner. Boulder carried roughly 65 percent of the possession but went into halftime scoreless.

The Panthers came out of the break determined and relentless. The entire third quarter was played almost entirely inside the Mountain Vista circle, with Boulder's high press keeping the Thunder in constant retreat. Still, the goal would not come. Corner opportunities were limited, and while the crowd could sense a breakthrough coming, the scoreboard remained locked at 0-0 heading into the final quarter.

Then, with just two minutes remaining, the moment arrived. A shot from the right side popped up in front of the Mountain Vista goal, and senior forward Tenley Lane reacted perfectly, redirecting the ball into the net from close range for the game's only goal. The late strike sealed Boulder's first-ever playoff win and sent the home crowd into celebration. The Panthers' defense, anchored by strong goaltending and a disciplined back line, closed out the shutout with composure.

The victory marked another step in Boulder's remarkable four-year rise from a brand-new program to a legitimate state contender. Founded through the efforts of early leaders Lyla Jolly and Courtney Windt, the team began as a junior varsity program and has since grown into one of the top squads in Colorado. Head coach Allyson Mullen has guided the Panthers to a 12-3-1 record this season, building on last year's inaugural varsity campaign that ended at 8-8-2.

Boulder's offensive power has been a hallmark of their success, with several players ranking among the state's top scorers. Lane leads the team in both goals and assists, while teammates Courtney Windt have all contributed heavily to the team's balanced attack.

Next up, the Panthers will travel to face top-seeded Cherry Creek at 4:15 PM on October 30th in the state quarterfinals. Boulder enters the matchup with momentum, confidence, and a belief that its storybook climb is still being written.
